Even companies who do their own recruitment turn to external recruiters for key hires. They are willing to invest in recruitment fees when necessary - sometimes doing this is the right decision. Companies who are not used to using a recruiter often don’t see the value and are hesitant to use them.
When to use a recruiter?
You want to turn over every rock to make sure you find and hire the right person - whether that person is looking to move or not.
You need very specific industry or technical experience or a specialist in some area.
You want to hire people out of certain companies but don’t have the relationships to approach them or reach them directly.
You want to recruit someone from a competitor and prefer to have a middleman do it for you.
The cost of allowing a position to go unfilled exceeds the cost of paying a recruitment fee.
How do you know you’ve found a good recruitment partner?
They know your industry / know what to look for.
They listen - properly listen
They have a transparent process
They are good ambassadors for your business
You have a relationship based on trust
They assess the person as well as the skill (remember most employers hire on skill and fire on behaviour). Look out for recruiters who use profiling platforms to give this process more certainty.
