How to Best Leverage and Network in Whatsapp Groups

May 2, 2024

This piece is centred around an Award winning networker, Marc Jarrett at Emjay Consultancy, who is in over 300 WhatsApp networking groups & is an expert in what works and doesn’t work in groups. This advice will serve you both as a job seeker and when you get into a role to partner with other businesses and add value based on your expertise.

When joining a group, introduce yourself by stating who you are, where you live, what you do, who you would like to meet and a fun fact if you have one.  Include your LinkedIn profile.

  •  Always remember to MUTE group notifications otherwise your phone will drive you nuts!
  •  Try and get into the habit of using WhatsApp on your computer using web.whatsapp.com
  •  If you see anyone joining a group, _welcome them_ and include your LinkedIn profile.
  • Be consistent / Share GREAT content / Show up /Be patient /Own the space / Be proactive.
  • Do not share videos without written context so viewers know what to expect.

Courteousness & respect are a given.  Avoid talking about politics, religion, vaccines and divisive or binary issues.

  • You HAVE TO BE PATIENT - this is a long game, harvest is always guaranteed if you plant enough seeds.
  • If you cannot cope with the amount of messages, vacate your space for someone who can.
  • Do not DM other members without discussing it in the group first.
  • To stop saving WhatsApp media to your phone's gallery, tap More options > Settings > Chats > Turn off Media visibility.
  • If you decide to leave a group, say goodbye to the other members first briefly stating why you are leaving.

Networking this way is not for everyone, but it can reap enormous dividends for those that do it right.  New friendships and partnerships are being forged all the time.
