Equal Pay Day, In The UK

November 4, 2019

Furnished apartment experts Nestpick have released data revealing Equal Pay Day in 100 countries around the world. Based on the national gender wage gap in each country, Equal Pay Day is the day in the year from which women essentially work for free until December 31st. The figures derive from a larger study, the 2019 Women’s Liveability Index, analysing the living standards for women worldwide.

As a company, Nestpick has always been fascinated with what makes certain locations better for different demographics. Given the ongoing struggle worldwide for gender parity, the apartment experts thought it would be interesting to use data and statistics to understand which countries offer the best living conditions for women and to bring attention to those nations offering the best equality, legislation, infrastructure and working balance for women.

Here is the top 20:

1. Norway
2. Sweden
3. Canada
4. Finland
5. Iceland
6. Denmark
7. Ireland
8. Slovenia
9. Austria
10. Estonia
11. Germany
12. Australia
13. Singapore
14. Switzerland
15. France
16. Netherlands
17. Spain
18. New Zealand
19. United Kingdom
20. Belgium

The United Kingdom's gender wage gap of 17.90% ranks it a lowly 19th but Saudi Arabia has the earliest Equal Pay Day in the index, on June 9th, with a wage gap of 56%. Women in Cameroon and Laos earn more than men on average (with gender wage gaps of -5.8% and -1.96% respectively) meaning that they will continue to earn equivalent to men into January of 2020.

"As you begin to understand that although one location might be a great place to call home for some, it might offer a very different experience for others,” comments Ömer Kücükdere, Managing Director of Nestpick. “With more and more women moving abroad than ever before, we wanted to create a resource that would help women to better understand the potential quality of life in different countries around the world.”
